Help De-List Spout Run

About the Spout Run Blogsite

The purpose of this Blogsite is to support a grant request by the Piedmont Environmental Co, Inc. to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to

1) Develop a locally supported management plan for the Spout Run watershed; and

2) Inform and inspire successful watershed planning processes in other Shenandoah Valley communities.

Background:

In February 2010, the state issued water-quality goals for sediment and bacteria in Spout Run, as well as for bacteria in two tributaries. To meet these goals, project partners will deliver the following outputs by September 2012:Sponsors

  • Baseline chemical, bacterial, and benthic water-quality data.
  • Two completed demonstration projects for homeowners, farmers, riparian lands, or urban areas.
  • A comprehensive, community-developed watershed management plan.
  • One or more grant awards for implementation of the Spout Run plan.
  • An online digital library of multimedia communication tools for other communities.
  • These outputs will result in the following outcomes:
  • Improved understanding of options for achieving water-quality goals.
  • Informed and engaged stakeholders and broadened support for watershed stewardship.
  • Changed behavioral norms and community commitments regarding water quality.
  • Secured funding to begin implementing the Spout Run plan.
  • Increased likelihood of successful watershed planning in the Chesapeake Bay region.

Partners include the Piedmont Environmental Council, The Downstream Project, Friends of the Shenandoah River, Greenway Garden Club, and Trout Unlimited.
